Nicklesburg

Nicklesburg is a fun site that helps teach about money. I love that they have a friendly Mayor that walks you through everything. This way you don’t have to guess at what you are doing and how to do it. This site teaches about money and how to use and save it. What a great thing for kids to learn young.

They are given tasks and receive money for completing them which they then get to spend.

They are asked to prioritize other’s spending, determine if it’s a long term or short term spending goal, figure out their long-term and short-term spending goals, and so much more.

I really like this site and feel that it teaches kids very valuable lessons about money. It’s always good to start teaching them young what to do and how to spend money. I see too many parents giving their kids an allowance but only transfer the money electronically so the kids never see or touch it. Kids can’t think that abstractly. If kids touch and see the money going in and out they are more likely to understand what is going on with the money and can learn how to use it.

I also recommend having something that shows them how much they have made and what their goal is. My son wanted a pillow pet so we had him do chores and earn it. I don’t usually have cash so we kept track of his earnings on a bar graph chart so he could see as how close he was to reaching his goal. We also encourage our children to donate money to charities and part of his money earning deal was so donate some of that money to help others.

Money is an abstract concept but if they can touch it or see how hard it is to earn the money for the things they want they will be better off in the long run. I also don’t give my kids money for everything they do. They have their normal “because you live here” chores and anything else they do is money in their pocket. It’s always better to learn those lessons young and not when you are an adult with bills.
