Teach Your Monster to Read

My 5 year old son informed me that he didn't like ANY of the computer games I had found and they were all boring yesterday. Time to begin another internet search for "fun" games. We stumbled upon "Teach Your Monster to Read" which was created by The Usborne Foundation. My kids really enjoy our Usborne books so I decided we should give it a try. I asked my 5 year old what he thought about it and well he was less than excited because it was a learning game until he started playing it.

Teach Your Monster to Read teaches letters, sounds and is COMPLETELY FREE for the computer version. They do have an app available for 4.99 which they charge for to help pay for creating new games. It was easy to register.
Setting my son up was simple. Just had to put his name in. I can add as many players as I want. On the HOME page I can check the stats, see what my son is working on, how he has done with the other sounds, so much information is available to help ME teach my son. I can also download a printable poster of his monster which he can name.

I was able to choose a level for my son. I got to choose the level for my son using the information the site provided below.  I could look at what they would learn in each level to help determine where to place him. It's solely based off a parent placement, not placement tests, just what I felt was best. I chose level 2 for my son, which started with the ch, sh, sounds which is about where he is. You  can only start at the beginning of a level so if your child already knows some of the information it's a good review and allows them the chance to learn how the games work before adding learning new content AND trying to learn how the games work which can become very confusing for kids.

Like I said earlier at first my 5 year old boy was not excited but that was more due to him being in a bad mood then him not liking the game because once he got started I had a hard time getting him off. He got to design a monster character to play with which he thought was awesome. The monsters were cute and there were so many options. You could change just about anything using their pre-made options.

He then started playing the games and was very excited to learn some new sounds and review some he already knew. It began by introducing a sound, asking them to say it, then finding it in words. When the game asked  him to repeat the sounds I told my son that his monster could hear him so he'd actually do it, the game can't really hear them but it sure got him participating. Things happen on the game after they say the sound, a door opens, they get to gather stars, or play a new game. It's very interactive.
This is an awesome site and I recommend it for kids who are showing interest in learning their letter sounds which is usually anywhere from 4-6 year olds.  If you start with level 1 and work your way through the whole program at 20 minutes a day (their recommendation) you'd finish all three levels in about 43 weeks. Another great thing about this program is you can go at your child's pace. The game remembers them and where they left off so if you don't want to do 20 minutes 5 days a week you don't have to. If your child is read to move to another level you can change that level on your HOME page instead of having to create a new player for them.

This site DID NOT have any other ads on the sides that would lead kids to dangerous places which I love! There are also a ton of free resources in the classroom section. You can find this by clicking on the teacher's area. I honestly just keep finding more and more exciting things with this site. The Usborne Foundation has done an awesome job creating this for new readers.

Color Fun x2

Playing with food coloring and water can be a fun way to learn about the primary and secondary colors. It's fun to mix and see what you create.

We started with clear containers so everyone could see what was happening and added red, yellow, and blue food coloring to the water. I grabbed a few extra containers to do the mixing.

Preparing for Kindergarten

I was reading a blog and unfortunately I don't remember where it was, but it was a blog from a Kindergarten Teacher. She was encouraging people to prepare their kids for Kindergarten and said that Kindergarten is no longer what it use to be. By the end of Kindergarten kids are now expected to read simple words. What can you do to make sure your kids are ready?

Does better handwriting mean higher scores in school?

I happened to stumble upon an article on CNN called "Connecting the dots between handwriting and hight scores." The article states the Dr. Laura Dinehart discovered that a child's ability for form letters when they are 4 was a strong indicator of their academic achievement later in life. She stated that those with better penmanship had higher reading and math scores.

Animal Alphabet Book

The other day the kids and I were just playing around and reading books. I got the idea to have them write their own animal alphabet book. We have taken each letter and come up with an animal that begins with that letter. It has been so much fun. My kids look forward to doing a little bit each day.

Sqool Tube

Tonight at the dinner table my so was telling us about bats and how they find bugs by making a noise. We said that was a really neat thing. My husband then asked if he wanted to learn something else about bats. My son said yes. My husband then told him that bat's can't see. This started an argument between my son and husband. In an effort to settle the argument I wanted to find the Magic School episode on Bats, with no luck. Netflix doesn't have them. The only place I have seen them is on Youtube. I did however stumble upon this really neat site that offers videos on just about any subject.

Alphabet

I just found a neat game for kids called Alphabet Marks the Spot. It's like twister, with a twist. It's an alphabet mat. The goal of the game is to run to the beginning letter of the picture on the dice before your opponent.

ZUI.com

Last night while I was watching mind numbing television after the kids went to sleep I saw a commercial for Zui.com. Now normally I don't pay too much attention to commercials. They are just noise but this one caught my attention because it was for an educational website. I got on and it was definitely not what I expected. I thought it would be another game site for kids but it's not. It's a site that offers collections of games on any subject. Kind of like Google. You type in what you want to learn about and then everything they have comes up.

Job Chart

I just found this neat FREE job chart site. It's called myjobchart.com. I believe it is important to teach kids to be responsible. My kids are very young but that doesn't mean they aren't expected to help out around the house.
This use to be a HUGE battle that was usually followed by a fit before the job was even started. Once the job was started it was play time and take as long as you can before completing the job. That was until I found this site while I was blogstocking. I don't remember which blog talked about this site but I'm glad they mentioned it.

ABC Mouse - for members

We recently got to review the portion of ABC Mouse that you can subscribe to. WOW. It was neat. I don't think my kids have played any of their other on-line games since. My son says "I think it's good and I want to play it."

Making Rain

Hurray Summer is finally here. Don't let the summer pass you by. There are so many activities that you can do with your kids while they are home to fill their time so they don't get the "I'm bored" syndrome.
My kids are just getting old enough to do Science experiments with me. We love "Messy Projects."
Here's our first one.

ABC Mouse - Math section

I’m sad to say that the free math section is not at neat as the reading section. There aren’t as many options for the kids. They pick a number 1-10 and are shown that many objects.

ABC Mouse

ABC mouse is a lot like Starfall and oh how I LOVE starfall!!!! They have a free section and a full curriculum for 7.95 a month or 79.00 a year. As a member you get to track your child’s progress, create your own lessons, and have access to more advanced content. The site is meant for ages 2-6 so up to First grade. As members your child can also earn tickets as they complete tasks which they can turn in for a digital reward. The basic site (free part) just covers reading and math basics, the membership site covers reading, math, art, science, geography, and music. Basically it’s an on-line preschool.

Authors Wanted UPDATED

Here is a great website where kids can pretend to be an author. Just think if you start soon you could have a wonderful, sentimental, Father's Day gift.

I am sad to say that this site only lets authorized teachers using Pearson Education products to create an account. If you want one ask your teacher if they use Pearson Education materials and if they would be willing to create an account for your student.

Google Art

WOW! A friend just showed me a neat website Art Project powered by Google. You can tour museums and see the art work. This would be a wonderful tool to use in the classroom. Just imagine schools no longer have to store paintings, teachers no longer have to search for the image to show their students because they are all in one place and just need to be projected on the wall. You can zoom in to see the individual brush strokes or walk through the museum and view all the paintings. They have a list of museums from around the world and a large selection or paintings to view.

Here is a Samples:

Van Gough's Farmhouse in a Wheat Field.

See how far you can zoom. You can see the individual brush strokes.

This is a great teaching tool for any grade.

Kabongo.com

I found this as an ad on facebook. See it pays to look at those ads once in a while. You have to register for this site and give your child a name and password. The site was created by Dr. Martin Fletcher, a graduate from Michigan's School for Professional Psychology. He has created a fun world of brain-boosting games that help young kids get excited about learning.
This site teaches the reading basics. My son and I had fun exploring the free sections. There are two other sections that we weren't able to get into because we didn't pay the fee. What we did see was pretty neat though.

Kabongo begins by having a parent help register the child. This way the games cansee what they have mastered and can make the activities more difficult.

My son was excited to play and earn the rewards. I loved that the first reward was immediate. After the game is explained the child then gets that chance to prove they know what they are doing. As soon as they do it right they receive a reward ( a sticker for their comic book, a section of their skate park).

My son really enjoyed these games. I also found the subscription very cheep. They are doing a deal where you can unlock galaxy garden for just 7.95. You pay once and play forever.

I haven't seen how difficult this site gets yet but I recommend this site for Preschool, Kindergarten, and 1st. Some second graders would also benefit reviewing with these games.

Website Review - Game Goo

I found this site with my son as I was looking for a phonic site that he could play on. This site makes lots of weird noises that or course my little boy just loves. It is full of fun educational games. I love the fact that it has different levels that challenge the kids. It goes from basic matching capital and lowercase letters to spelling words that they hear. It has funny creatures that go with teach game. The best part is there are NO AD's on this site so there aren't any crazy things for them to click on that will take them to a different site without you knowing.
I wish I could pull over a picture of the site but my computer did an update and it won't let me do that anymore so until I figure out how to take screen shots on a mac you will just have to view them for yourself.
Ages: pre-K - 2
Grade: A+
Cost: Nothing

Word lists

I have been looking on-line for word lists and found some really good ones that I like. I have put them together so all you have to do is print them out. The one I have today is for a Pre-Primer reader. A pre-primer reader is a child that knows all their letter names and their sounds. They have also begun to put the sounds together to make one sound. It's kind of hard to give an example in writing but I will try. C A T (they are just saying the sounds) A pre-primer reader begins to put those sounds together slowly C A T and then they get faster so it comes out as one sound CAT.

The other document I have posted is a memory math game. I was working with my 4 year old and boy do we have a huge hole in his learning. He doesn't know what the number symbols are after 10 (he doesn't know 11 on up). He can almost count to 100 but man did I miss a major part of his math learning. This is a memory game that shows the numbers in the 3 forms we use, number words, symbols (4, 5, 9) and in an amount. I used a 10 grid to for the number amount because that is how we commonly see amounts in school. Teachers really want kids to be able to look at a group in an organized manner (like a 10 grid) an know exactly how many items are there. It's kind of like looking at the dots on dice but this works all the way to 10 not just 6.
