Dreambox

I just found out about dreambox math when a reader posted a comment. Thanks for telling me about it. I'm always looking for new sites to review. We just signed up for the free 14 day trial and so far it's been really fun.

I really like that a parent can play the program without creating a different child or using your child's account to figure out what is going on. Let's face it we have all played as our child to learn how to help them navigate through the program, which then messes up their data on the computer. If there isn't an option to play as a parent, and most sites I have seen don't have this option, have your child still answer the questions and give their answer whether it's right or wrong as you learn how the program works this way it doesn't mess up their data and you learn whether it's a program you want to subscribe too or how to help them if there's a problem.

Dreambox has lessons and keeps track of your child's data. You can always check and see what they have done, what they are learning, and how they have done in the past. They have a unique graph with a key that tells you if your child has passed the pre-test on a topic, passed it off in the placement test, or if they passed if off during the lesson.

A Placement test is given and looks just like the game so your kids don't know they are a test, it's just another game they get to play. The picture above is an example of the placement test but my son was playing a game that looked just like it before I kicked him off to give it a test run.

Tutorials teach your kids how to use the virtual manuplatives (math tools). I  did the 10 grid game and was very impressed with the way the "teacher" gave little hints and advice throughout the whole lesson. I also like that they use math vocabulary (10 grid, digits ect...). This will help your child throughout their math education. They will easily be able to transfer what they are learning on Dreambox to what they are learning in the classroom.

The lessons go from Kindergarten to a 4th grade level. The graphics are age appropriate. Your 4th grader will not be seeing this cute girl and dinosaur.

This is a neat site. I found the pricing a little confusing. Their site seems to cater to schools and so make sure you a looking at patents section for the pricing. For 1 child it's $12.95 a month or $59.95 for 6 months and for up to 4 children is $19.95 a month or $99.95 for 6 months.

This would be a good site for kids from Preschool to struggling 5th and 6th graders.
